Introduction

FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, has been around for several decades, and it was once the primary means of transferring files over the internet. However, as technology has advanced, the security and reliability issues with FTP have become increasingly apparent. Many articles have been written to document why FTP is not a suitable solution for the use cases in which it is commonly deployed.

Despite the risks and drawbacks of using FTP, many businesses continue to rely on it as their file transfer solution. Why is this the case? The answer lies in the fact that traditional alternatives to FTP have only solved one aspect of the FTP workflow, which is the file transport portion of the workflow. These solutions are focused solely on moving files from point A to point B, but they do not address the workflow of the users transferring the files.

Furthermore, many of the alternatives to FTP that exist today are geared towards enterprise-sized organizations, leaving small and medium-sized businesses priced out of these solutions. This is a major obstacle for SMBs, as they often lack the resources to invest in expensive solutions that only address one aspect of their workflow.

As a result, businesses are forced to weigh the risks and benefits of using FTP versus the available alternatives. For some organizations, the risks associated with FTP may be acceptable, particularly if they do not handle sensitive or confidential data. For others, the risks are simply too great, and they are willing to invest in more robust solutions to meet their file transfer needs.

The good news is that there are alternatives to FTP that are specifically designed to address the workflow of the users transferring the files, in addition to providing secure and reliable file transfer. Download the white paper to learn more.
